Lithgow Perkins is looking to recruit a bookkeeper and payroll administrator to our fantastic team based in the centre of Harrogate.

The ideal person would have some experience in practice, although not necessarily years and years of experience, but rather someone who’s had exposure to a similar role.

AAT study support would be provided. There is also scope, for the right candidate, to grow within this successful chartered accountancy firm and to gain exposure in different departments, such as Accounts and Tax.

The role would be ideal for someone with great time management and relationship building skills who copes well under pressure to meet tight deadlines.

Bookkeeper and payroll administrator Harrogate

Salary: £25,000 – £30,000 dependent on experience

Payroll duties:

  • Reporting to payroll manager, but would be responsible for own portfolio of clients
  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Weekly, monthly, 4-weekly pay runs
  • Calculating SMP, SSP and SPP where necessary
  • Processing and submitting workplace pension information
  • Liaising with HMRC
  • Responding to and resolving payroll client queries

Bookkeeping duties:

  • Responsible for own portfolio of bookkeeping clients.
  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
    • Submission of VAT returns
    • Liaising and working with accounts department during preparation of financial statements
    • Very varied portfolio of clients of different sizes and different industries
    • Dealing with sales ledger, purchase ledger, bank accounts, other control accounts
    • Preparing management accounts in some cases
    • Other ad hoc work required by client


  • Previous experience working in payroll
  • Experience with Superpay software desirable but not essential
  • Strong IT skills – mainly Excel and Word
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a lot of the work involves communicating with clients and also with HMRC
  • Previous experience with bookkeeping
  • Experience with Sage Line 50 essential and Xero, Kashlow, Sage One and other cloud accounting software packages would be desirable but not essential
  • Responds well to working to tight deadlines
  • Manages time well, in order to meet deadlines
