Business groups have called for clarity and direction, following the Conservatives' resounding general election victory.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson secured a 78-seat majority in the 12 December 2019 election.

And business leaders have cautiously welcomed the clear result, hoping it will restore economic stability and resolve lingering issues.

Mike Cherry, chairman at the Federation of Small Businesses, said:

"Small business will be looking to the new government to achieve positive change, not least with a pro-business Budget in early February.

"This government needs to deliver a business-friendly Brexit, one that protects trade, talent and a proper transition - the third of those is critical."

That view was echoed by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), which prioritised securing an orderly exit from the EU.

Adam Marshall, director-general at the BCC, said:

"Campaign slogans must give way to a renewed focus on the details that matter.

"Our businesses need to see swift, decisive action to avoid a messy exit from the EU and to tackle the barriers holding back investment and growth."

The Institute of Directors (IoD) said companies are eager for clarity in order for them to plan for the decade ahead.

Jonathan Geldart, director-general at the IoD, said:

"For directors, ‘Get Brexit Done' will only have meaning once the details of our long-term future relationship with the EU are clear.

"Our members have made clear that the content and shape of any deal are much more important than simply the speed in getting there.

"On the domestic front, we must now see progress on the challenges that have been holding the economy back - from skills to infrastructure."
